February is Black History Month

One of the driving focuses of libraries in the current climate is to promote books that will expose readers to different experiences and perspectives so as to increase a reader's awareness and empathy toward people of different backgrounds and realities. To that end, we celebrate Black History Month in the Town School Library!

Black History Month

In Second Grade, we are tying these lessons to elements of storytelling. After watching BrainPOP Jr. videos about characters, setting, and plot, we are reading fiction and nonfiction stories that illuminate the African-American experience and showcase these elements of storytelling. The boys also are encouraged to check out historical fiction and nonfiction so that they may read about experiences that shaped the world around them.

While we are not shying away from talking about the injustice of racism and slavery, we are also mindful of keeping the conversation age appropriate. Some feelings and questions may arise at home. Please feel free to reach out for more resources as needed!
