We've been having lessons this week in using the Internet safely and responsibly. These videos supplemented our lessons:

In Kindergarten, we talked about being safe online by comparing it to a school field trip. Just like how in real life, you follow your teacher's rules, stay with the group, and never talk to strangers, when you are online, you follow your family's rules, stay on trusted websites, and only communicate with people you know!

In first grade, we talked about how our real life community is different from our online community. We also talked about how we behave in real life translate to how we behave online.

In second grade, we talked about giving credit to your own creative work, as well as citing any work you use. This is a big, heavy topic involving bibliographies and plagiarism! Isn't it too early to talk about this stuff in second grade? Actually, with how easy it is to copy and paste information and right click to save images, it important to talk about this now before students develop bad research habits.

Our students are savvy about technology, but the idea that students of this generation are "internet natives" is misleading.  Like with anything, students need training and guidance when learning how to properly navigate new information. You can help your boys by continuing these conversations at home!
